MIDWAY JOURNEY II – First Impressions

Dear Friends and Followers of Midway Journey,

Thank you for your patience as we have taken a few days to find our bearings and connect to the Internet.  We are astonished and delighted to find ourselves back here again on remote Midway Atoll.  The tiny island is now covered with several hundred thousand fledgling albatrosses inhabiting the paths, walkways, roads, meadows, and even the runway.

It’s hard to describe the complex mixture of feelings that arise in the presence of this incredible abundance of wildlife, especially as we are keenly aware of the devastating effects of the plastic that fills the stomachs of a huge percentage of these young birds.  One purpose of this leg of our journey is to witness their annual die-off, which will result in thousands of plastic-filled carcasses covering the ground as we saw when we visited here last September.

We’ve already begun to acquaint ourselves with the new stories that this chapter of our journey holds, and we look forward to sharing them with you over the next couple of weeks.  Thank you for joining us in this process.

With warm regards from Midway Atoll,

Chris, Victoria, Jan & Joe

What a GREAT feeling to see this sight again…! You feel like you are on God’s land when you are there… I so wish that everyone on the plant can experience what you feel when you are there. There pier that you road down I jumped off of as a kid (teen) to get my scuba diving certification, AVA MARIE I prayed at..it was almost right outside my front door…The water tower I received first place in a photo contest when a gooney flew right under it and I snapped a picture, while just laying on my back day dreaming..haha What a great feeling to have again, To wake up and see this on the 4th is sooo nice. Because I was there on the 4th of July 1976 what a great grand time, we had..!..Happy 4th of July may your journey be nothing but blessings.. Thank you for sharing.. Cat

    Hi Chris & Victoria,
So glad you’ve arrived safely on Midway. We are holding you and your team in our thoughts and prayers. Note: the video doesn’t work (at least on our satellite internet connection here on Cortes Island!).
    Love, Rick and Peggy

hi….was surfin the web and came upon your midway posts. i was stationed there in 1977-78 as the base was being downgraded.how sad to see all that plastic debris and the bird kills. in those days most of the debris on the beaches was broken glass and wood items, the glass being broken “fishballs”,broken glass floats from the days b4 plastic was so dominant, i still have several of them 30 years later.i was thinking of perhaps returning again ,now im not so sure. i live in the florida keys ,soon to suffer the raw form of plastic polution in the form of BP tarballs.if it is your intent to awaken people to polution,u have succeded with me. i live low on the carbon totem and am happy to say so……good luck to u all and thx for the pictures.

  • MIDWAY

The MIDWAY media project is a powerful visual journey into the heart of an astonishingly symbolic environmental tragedy. On one of the remotest islands on our planet, tens of thousands of baby albatrosses lie dead on the ground, their bodies filled with plastic from the Pacific Garbage Patch. Returning to the island over several years, our team is witnessing the cycles of life and death of these birds as a multi-layered metaphor for our times. With photographer Chris Jordan as our guide, we walk through the fire of horror and grief, facing the immensity of this tragedy—and our own complicity—head on. And in this process, we find an unexpected route to a transformational experience of beauty, acceptance, and understanding.

We frame our story in the vividly gorgeous language of state-of-the-art high-resolution digital cinematography, surrounded by millions of live birds in one of the world’s most beautiful natural sanctuaries. The viewer will experience stunning juxtapositions of beauty and horror, destruction and renewal, grief and joy, birth and death, coming out the other side with their heart broken open and their worldview shifted. Stepping outside the stylistic templates of traditional environmental or documentary films, MIDWAY will take viewers on a guided tour into the depths of their own spirits, delivering a profound message of reverence and love that is already reaching an audience of tens of millions of people around the world.
